Love Land is a groundbreaking, award winning, narrative feature film which stars actors with intellectual and development disabilities. The film challenges stereotypes of labels, love, and liberty, and was produced in association with Community Now! and the Disability Cinema Coalition, and funded in part by the San Francisco Film Association Kenneth Rainin Foundation.
Love Land was directed and written by Josh Tate, originally from San Antonio, who holds degrees from UT Austin and USC film school in Los Angeles. Tate says, “Love Land is about inclusion: the inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our communities, in the arts, and in the media. It’s about seeing all people at eye-level and breaking through the common social barriers and stereotypes.”
“We are thrilled to partner with StageCenter with the generous support of United Healthcare to bring Love Land to Bryan/College Station.” states Jeff Garrison-Tate, one of the founders of Community Now!. “The film does not hold back on issues facing people with intellectual disabilities- issues that have never been presented on film. The performances by actors with disabilities are stunning and have received rave reviews by mainstream media, as well as receiving awards for ensemble acting performances at national film festivals in competition with non-disabled actors.”
“We at StageCenter are excited to be involved in this screening. For too long, roles for people with disabilities have been played by actors without disabilities and it’s time to change that,” says Jennifer Hargis of StageCenter Theatre. “We all see people with disabilities everywhere we go- at work, at the grocery store, etc., but the only time we see people with disabilities when we’re at the movies is when they are sitting in the audience. We want to help normalize in film what is already normal in real life.”
Community Now! is a non-profit organization that supports people with intellectual disabilities to live their lives as they define them in community. Community Now! produces films that challenge viewers to look past the labels and stereotypes and recognize that people with intellectual disabilities want what everyone else has and that they are people first.
Love Land will be screened at StageCenter Theatre on March 26th, with a reception at 6:30. A panel discussion with the lead actors will follow the screening. Tickets are $15.00 and benefit Community Now!
Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.
